PREPARATION OF THE EXPEDITION FROM MARCH 2005 UNTIL AUGUST 2006
While they were still catching their breath after the exciting and dangerous adventure in the Low's Gully on Borneo, Hans already knew what the next challenge would be: the Gobi desert!
Immediately after returning home in March 2005 he started developping plans and looking for possibilities. The idea came quickly. The challenge would be a solo kitebuggy journey through the Gobi desert. Solo, but not completely on his own. He would need support during this adventure, to carry water, food and gear. The Gobi desert is merciless, and he did not want to take unnecessary risks.
Arjanna, Hans' wife, decided to support him during the journey. And they would also take their 3,5 year old son with them. They planned to be from home for 2 months, so they felt it would be preferable to be together. Other teammembers were sought. In July it was clear the the whole team would consist of five adults and one child. In Mongolia they will get support from a local, who will also drive an extra car to carry necessary fuel, water and food, for the approximately 23 days they will spend in the Gobi desert.
Hans searched and found sponsors. He bought a 4x4 Fiat Ducato and arranged it to be converted into a mobile home. He trained. And all other arrangements were done (visa, insurance, gear, food, maps, GPS, clothing, satellite phone and internet connection etc.).
Somewhat later than hoped for, Hans, Arjanna and Bram were ready to depart. But then a small disaster happened: fire in the mobile home. After an evening and night of hard work, they could still depart on Sunday 5 August.
